Thank You for Supporting Waldorf School of Orange County

Providing an Extraordinary Educational Experience

WSOC’s Annual Giving Campaign is an opportunity for every family to help support the immediate financial needs of the school. The Annual Giving campaign provides an opportunity for our parents, faculty, alumni, past parents, grandparents, businesses and other friends to support our school’s annual operating budget. It is our most important source of unrestricted funds that impacts every student, every day, by ensuring funding for a comprehensive and dynamic curriculum of mathematics, language arts, science, cultural and foreign language study, performing arts, applied arts, music and movement. The extraordinary educational experience Waldorf School of Orange County provides is directly tied to the philanthropic support the school receives from its community.

Waldorf School of Orange County is among only a handful of schools nationally who offer the Waldorf curriculum through 12th grade. Your gift helps support our outstanding faculty, robust curriculum, and tuition adjustment program by making a Waldorf education accessible to more than 63 students last year. Did you know that last year we invested over $26,000 in teacher training/conferences and close to $18,000 in mentoring and evaluation? Our school recognizes the importance of investing in its faculty because they are a big part of what makes your child's experience so enriching.

The school’s financial strength is dependent upon the participation of all members of its constituency. We strive for 100% participation as a testament to our community’s dedication and indication of how much they value this education for their children.

On behalf of all of our students and faculty, thank you for your support. We could not do it without you!

Frequent Asked Questions

What is Annual Giving?

It is a direct appeal to trustees, parents, grandparents, alumni parents, alumni, faculty, staff, and friends for financial contributions in support of the school's day-to-day operating budget. It is a way to sustain the highest functionality of the school while keeping tuition increases as minimal as possible. Tuition is not tax-deductible, but gifts to Annual Giving are tax-deductible.

What are the major components of the school's operating budget?

The majority of the school's operating budget is spent on salaries and benefits. The remaining is spent on facilities, program expenses, and general operating costs. The Board of Trustees strives to run the school as lean as possible without compromising the integrity of the program.

Why is Annual Giving Necessary?

Tuition income covers most of our operating expenses. The remaining is raised through our Giving Program: Annual Giving, Scrip, Company of Angels, and special events such as the Gala. Each of our attending families is asked to make a donation to Annual Giving in addition to paying tuition, to help close this gap. Annual Giving is the single most important component of our Giving Program. If a family had to choose one type of giving over another, hands down we would encourage Annual Giving to be their choice.

Why not just raise tuition?

As a private, non-denominational school, WSOC does not receive public funding or religious support. Yet WSOC has among the lowest tuition rates in Orange County. We aim to keep tuition accessible and affordable to continue to attract and retain a diverse student body. Remember, tuition is a non-tax-deductible contracted contribution to the school, while gifts to the Annual Giving fund are fully tax-deductible.

What makes WSOC an independent school?

We design our own program and curriculum, operate without financial support from federal or state government agencies, and are self-governed by our Board of Trustees and College of Teachers. Unlike public schools, which are funded by tax dollars, independent schools rely solely upon tuition revenues and philanthropic gifts to meet their operating and capital expenses.

Are there other fundraising activities besides Annual Giving?

Yes, in addition to Annual Giving, the school has several initiatives and events to help close the operating budget gap. These include The Company of Angels school store, Scrip, and special events such as the Annual Gala.

Who supports Annual Giving?

Every segment of the school community! The Board of Trustees, faculty, staff, parents, grandparents, alumni parents, alumni, and friends. In past years we have had enrolled family participation rates as high as 98%. We strive for 100% participation as a testament to our community's dedication and indication of how much they value this education for their children.

Why is participation important?

The school's financial strength is dependent upon the participation of all members of its constituency. Your participation generates enthusiasm and encourages others to join you. It is also a key indicator to foundation and corporate donors that we have consistent support from those we serve, both past and present. When 100% of the people who benefit from our organization also care enough to donate, this sends a strong message helping us to obtain outside grants and gifts.

How much should I give?

Participation of all sized gifts is needed. Some families truly cannot afford to give that much, yet others in the community are blessed with the means to contribute more. We ask each family to look into their heart and give to their family's best ability. Please consider making your gift in monthly installments to maximise your contribution over time.

Do corporations and foundations support Annual Giving?

Corporations typically contribute to independent schools by offering matching gifts to their employees' contributions. Many WSOC families are able to double their personal contributions through such employee match programs. Check with your employer to see if they have a matching policy. If they do, we will do whatever is necessary to help obtain the gift.

Foundations general give to Annual Giving appeals when there is a direct personal connection to the organization. Usually they are more interested in specific projects that are within their funding guidelines and advance their specific area of interest.

Can I donate stock to Annual Giving?

The school welcomes gifts of appreciated stock. If you have been fortunate enough to recognize some substantial capital gains, please consider donating your appreciated stock to the school’s Annual Giving fund. It’s a convenient way to make a meaningful contribution while recognizing some potential year-end tax planning benefits. Please contact Jeff Barth, WSOC Business Manager, at (949) 574-7775 for details on how to donate stock.
