The effort to complement students' natural abilities begins at an early age and continues throughout their time at a Waldorf school. It is encouraged by the curriculum and supported by the fundamental understanding that a child's strength should not become their weakness because of one-sided development.

The Scrip Store — Frequently Asked Questions

 WHAT IS SCRIP?back to top

Scrip is 'substitute money.' It looks, and functions, just like the gift cards and paper certificates you may have purchased directly from stores in the past. Use it like money or a credit card for everyday expenses. Buy gas, groceries, clothing, and entertainment or restaurants. Simply check the list of stores for those you regularly patronize... purchase scrip at school... then shop as you normally do. Offering freedom of choice, versatility, and ease of use, scrip is also a great gift idea for anyone, on any occasion!

HOW DOES THE SCHOOL BENEFIT FROM SCRIP?back to top

The school buys large quantities of scrip from merchants at a discount, and sells it to you at face value. The difference between the discounted price and face value of the scrip is profit for the school. You get $1 in purchasing power for every $1 you spend on scrip, and the school profits: a win-win situation for you and the school!

WHAT IS MY SCRIP RESPONSIBILITY?back to top

Per the tuition contract, every family enrolled in pre-K through high school is responsible for generating $275 scrip profit between August 4th, 2009 and July 22nd, 2010. This amount is per family, not per child: the Smith family with two children at WSOC has the same responsibility for scrip profit as the Jones family with one child. The $275 per family profit offsets whole-school operating expenses that would otherwise need to be covered by increased tuition or fees.

WHY TARGET "PROFIT," NOT "TOTAL PURCHASED"?back to top

Merchants offer us varying discounts. Some give the school 20%, others, 2%. The mix of scrip you buy determines the school's profit. When you reach your $275 scrip-profit target, you will be notified by The Scrip Store. You don't need to track your profits: confidential records of scrip profits are kept, and your scrip-profit total is available to you, at any time, upon request.

HOW DO I REACH MY PROFIT TARGET?back to top

There are three ways to reach your target:

WHAT IF I DON'T MAKE MY TARGET?back to top

If a family does not reach the $275 scrip-profit responsibility by the end of July, they will be billed for the remaining amount. If a family leaves the school, the $275 obligation is NOT prorated.

HOW WILL THIS BENEFIT MY CHILD'S CLASS?back to top

Families who reach their $275 scrip-profit target become class donors, and 50¢ of every $1.00 of profit earned from scrip purchases over the $275 target goes to their classroom account. The Scrip Store distributes funds monthly. Class teachers and room parents may use these extra funds as needed for classroom needs, field trips, or other class-specific needs!

HOW MUCH MAY I EARN FOR MY CHILD'S CLASS?back to top

There is no limit to what class donors may earn for their class. The more a class donor earns, the more their class bank account grows. Last year, $17,000 was contributed to classroom accounts. Two classes received more than $2,000 each from their prolific class donors!

WHAT IF MORE THAN ONE CHILD IS ENROLLED?back to top

Families with more than one child enrolled choose how to distribute the funds among the classes. Give it all to one class, split it 50-50, or whatever you want.

HOW DO I PURCHASE SCRIP?back to top

The Scrip Store is located in the School Office, and is open during the school year from 8:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. on all school days, and summers on an abbreviated schedule (published at the end of the school year).

Pre-plan your purchases to save time! Scrip order forms are available in the Scrip Store (but are not required for purchases). Fill them out at home or at school. You can also fax them to: 949-574-7740. Purchase may also be made online: Scrip Order.

CAN I PURCHASE SCRIP ONLINE?back to top

You can fill out and submit an order form online, then quickly complete the transaction while at school. Your order will be waiting. Verify that it is correct, pay for it, and you're finished!

HOW DO I PAY FOR SCRIP?back to top

Personal checks (to "WSOC"), cash, and ATM. You may also use VISA or MasterCard, but a 2.5% handling fee will be added to all credit card purchases.

HOW LONG DO I HAVE TO WAIT?back to top

The Scrip Store maintains stock for all the merchants and businesses listed on the order form. With the exception of an occasional back-order, scrip is always available. All gift cards and certificates are activated, ready for you to use immediately.

 DOES SCRIP EXPIRE?back to top

No, it is against California law for expiration dates, even if listed, to be enforced. If scrip is ever refused, or if you have questions, comments or concerns, contact:
