Overview Grade School High School Faculty Application
The Kindergarten is the bridge between family and school life. Each day begins with free play: play being the work of the young child. It is the time for the child to live in his/her imagination and to create houses from cloth, small villages in the sandbox, wood projects, puppet shows and dramas of all sorts. It also is the time to develop social skills with both playmates and teachers; learning to listen, to share, to help and to respect each other.

Within the free play period there is time for water-color painting, drawing, baking, beeswax modeling, hand crafts and nature walks. Each of these artistic activities has its own special day and contributes to the soothing rhythm of the week.

After clean-up time comes the circle, a time for singing games, verses and poems, nature stories, drama and beautiful seasonal songs. All circle activities are learned through imitation. Through the rhythm of word, music and movement, we work towards the integration of the whole being of the child, right down to the fingers and toes. Quiet time and snack, complete with candles and lyre music, give everyone a chance to relax and "breathe out" before some rousing outdoor play.

The final part of our morning is the telling of a fairy tale, drawing on classic tales that are full of wisdom. During this time there may be puppet plays or a simple acting out of the story by the children. A daily and weekly rhythm of activities is planned by the teacher to provide time for both structure and spontaneity. This plan for the class as a whole is balanced by the philosophy that each child is a unique individual with special needs and talents to be nurtured.
